    MODIS information, data and control system (MIDACS) operations concepts

    The MODIS Information, Data, and Control System (MIDACS) Operations Concepts Document provides a basis for the mutual understanding between the users and the designers of the MIDACS, including the requirements, operating environment, external interfaces, and development plan. In defining the concepts and scope of the system, how the MIDACS will operate as an element of the Earth Observing System (EOS) within the EosDIS environment is described. This version follows an earlier release of a preliminary draft version. The individual operations concepts for planning and scheduling, control and monitoring, data acquisition and processing, calibration and validation, data archive and distribution, and user access do not yet fully represent the requirements of the data system needed to achieve the scientific objectives of the MODIS instruments and science teams. The teams are not yet formed; however, it is possible to develop the operations concepts based on the present concept of EosDIS, the level 1 and level 2 Functional Requirements Documents, and through interviews and meetings with key members of the scientific community. The operations concepts were exercised through the application of representative scenarios

    MODIS-HIRIS ground data systems commonality report

    The High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (HIRIS) and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) Data Systems Working Group was formed in September 1988 with representatives of the MODIS Data System Study Group and the HIRIS Project Data System Design Group to collaborate in the development of requirements on the EosDIS necessary to meet the science objectives of the two facility instruments. A major objective was to identify and promote commonality between the HIRIS and MODIS data systems, especially from the science users' point of view. A goal was to provide a base set of joint requirements and specifications which could easily be expanded to a Phase-B representation of the needs of the science users of all EOS instruments. This document describes the points of commonality and difference between the Level-II Requirements, Operations Concepts, and Systems Specifications for the ground data systems for the MODIS and HIRIS instruments at their present state of development

    Versão pós-printThis study examined the effects of contextual and cognitive variables for sexual protection on perceived social relationship factors. University students (108 women and 108 men) read script-based narratives on sexual encounters inwhich six variables were manipulated in two independent analyses. In thefirst analysis, fourvariableswere evaluated: relational context (stable, casual), condom use (yes, no), script terminus (beginning, middleor end), andthe rater’s sex.Thedependentvariables were interpersonal perception of one of the characters of the narrative, and expectations regarding characteristics and future of the relationship. In the second analysis, two other factors were manipulated only in the‘‘yes’’condom conditions: communicationstrategy (verbal,non-verbal)andcondomproponent gender. Our findings corroborated other studies where condom use was viewed as unromantic with less positive characteristics for relationships. Condom proponents, especiallymale, were perceived as lessromantic,particularlywhenproposingacondomnon-verbally at the beginning of the encounter. However, the controlled variables enabled us to proposeways of associating condomuse withpositive expectationstowards theproponentandthe relationship itself.Romanticism, expectationof sexual intercourse, emotional proximity, and expectations of condom use in encounters where a condom was proposed increased when suggested by a woman,postponedtotheendof theencounter,andverballymentioned.     We will extend the classical derived bracket construction to any algebra over a binary quadratic operad. We will show that the derived product construction is a functor given by the Manin white product with the operad of permutation algebras. As an application, we will show that the operad of prePoisson algebras is isomorphic to Manin black product of the Poisson operad with the preLie operad.     38 pagesInternational audienceWe extend the bar-cobar adjunction to operads and properads, not necessarily augmented. Due to the default of augmentation, the objects of the dual category are endowed with a curvature. We handle the lack of augmentation by extending the category of coproperads to include objects endowed with a curvature. As usual, the bar-cobar construction gives a (large) cofibrant resolution for any properad, such as the properad encoding unital and counital Frobenius algebras, a notion which appears in 2d-TQFT. We also define a curved Koszul duality theory for operads or properads presented with quadratic, linear and constant relations, which provides the possibility for smaller relations. We apply this new theory to study the homotopy theory and the cohomology theory of unital associative algebras

    Archaeometric analysis of ceramic production in Tiwanaku state (c.500-1000ce) : An exploratory study

    The chemical and mineralogical characterization of seven ceramic fragments produced within Tiwanaku state (c.500-1000 ce) is reported. The instrumental techniques used included X-ray elemental and mineralogical chemical analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning and light microscopy. The results indicate there are several clay types, although they show similarities, such as the use of a plant-based temper. The red colour of the decoration is hematite, and manganese oxides such as jacobsite are present in the black. The white colour is a mixture of gypsum and clay, and the orange is a mixture of hematite and clay. The use of colours, the quality of the clays and the temperatures reached during pottery firing point to expertise in ceramic production and to complex decision-making processes. The multi-elemental archaeometric approach documented here could become an important tool to shed a light on ancient ceramic technology and the internal variance of Tiwanaku pottery.Peer reviewe
